to be memorized by friday.

shakespeare; sonnet 43

when most i blink, then do mine eyes best see,
for all the day they view things unrespected
But when i sleep, in dreams they look on thee
And darkly bright is bright in dark directed.
then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright
how would thy shadows form happy show
to thy clear day with thy much clearer light
when to unseeing eyes, thy shades shine so?
how would, i say, mine eyes be blessed made
by looking on thee in the living days
when in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay?
all days are nights to see till i see thee
And nights bright days when dreams do show me thee.

Paraphrased by me;
i see things best when my eyes are closed (when most i wink, then so mine eyes best see)
All day i look at what i don't really care for and dont really pay attention to (for all the day they view things unrespected)
when i sleep, i dream of you (but when i sleep, in dreams they look on thee)
You brighten up the dark (And in darkly bright is bright in dark directed)
Your shadow brightens up the dark (then thou, whos shadow shadows doth make bright)
In real life, on a clear day, are you even brighter? (how would thy shadows form happy show to thy clear day with thy much clearer light, when to unseeing eyes, thy shades shine so?)
i would be blessed to see you in real life and not just my dreams (how would i say mine eyes be blessed made by looking on thee in the living days)
I DON'T KNOW...(when in dead night thy fair imperfect shade through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay?)
All my days are dark nights until i get to see you again (all days are nights to see till i see thee)
And my nights become bright days when i see you in my dreams ( and nights bright days when dreams do show me thee)

Benjamin Britten wrote music for orchestra and tenor w/ this sonnet in his Nocturne, Op. 60. It's actually the best piece too!
